Photo: Gray Cloud Over Fallbrook

I am organizing and editing my old reference photos captured while on painting trips and am thinking of printing some of them for display in my studio.  In school, I fancied myself a photographer and even won some awards.  Later as a landscape watercolorist, I traveled the world looking for inspiration and honing my craft.  If not actually painting or sketching on site, I often amused myself with the camera.  Early on in my career, I discovered that beautiful photographs frequently translated into mediocre paintings because photography has unique qualities that can't be easily duplicated in other media.  Over time, I developed a technique of taking reference photos that didn't make beautiful photography but captured the details of a composition I would work out later in my studio.  However, sometimes I couldn't help myself and would work out the composition in the camera.  Nothing ever came of these images until now.

Black Labyrinths and Mazes

Last month, I started gathering information for my Federal Income taxes.  What a tremendous waste of time and energy.  In a foul, black mood, I started playing with the idea of black on black squares.  This evolved into a series of three-dimensional mazes and labyrinths. After some research, I discovered the subtle distinction between mazes and labyrinths.  A maze is a confusing network of paths easily lost in while a labyrinth is a convoluted pathway but with an entrance, exit and only one way forward.

I still haven't completed my taxes - so I'm sure to have the inspiration to do more.
