MOVING WATER - Kinetic Wind Sculpture and Bench

The Alexandria Commission for the Arts awarded me a Special Opportunity Grant for a public art project.   My proposal "Moving Water" is for a kinetic wind sculpture and park bench to be placed along the shore of the Potomac River.  With multiple ten-foot vertical extensions braced within the structure that catch and sway with the wind, the design is meant to give the impression of the Potomac River in motion.

Inspiration:  The movement of the Potomac River is profound.  You can sit and watch the water for hours on end and see it ever changing.  How many words in the English language describe water in motion?  A few like seeping, soaking, sprinkling, shimmering, sinking, spilling, steaming, streaming, swirling, surging, splattering, spattering, splashing, squirting, spurting, and spraying when strung together give the sense you are being swept away in the current gasping for air.  The ever flowing Potomac River is a great resource for Alexandria and inspired the concept for this public art proposal.

I am organizing and editing my old reference photos captured while on painting trips and am thinking of printing some of them for display in my studio.  In school, I fancied myself a photographer and even won some awards.  Later as a landscape watercolorist, I traveled the world looking for inspiration and honing my craft.  If not actually painting or sketching on site, I often amused myself with the camera.  Early on in my career, I discovered that beautiful photographs frequently translated into mediocre paintings because photography has unique qualities that can't be easily duplicated in other media.  Over time, I developed a technique of taking reference photos that didn't make beautiful photography but captured the details of a composition I would work out later in my studio.  However, sometimes I couldn't help myself and would work out the composition in the camera.  Nothing ever came of these images until now.
